- Why are we so angry?
After giving a lecture at a Church in England, author Gary Zukav was chatting with audience members when he saw their eyes suddenly widen in horror. He began to turn but was too late – an angry, disheveled little man with wild eyes came up and struck him from behind on the back of his neck. As Gary wheeled around to face his assailant, the man came at him again. In that moment, this ex- Green Beret put out his hand in a nonviolent gesture and asked his assailant: “Why are you so angry?” Confused, the man stopped, muttered something and walked quickly away towards the altar, where he kneeled and started to pray. As he prayed, Gary’s heart melted for he knew the man’s prayer was sincere . . .+
When the pressures of the world make us angry, our first reaction is often to take it out on someone else. What we do not realize is that underneath the anger is fear. Most negative responses have their root in fear. Once we become aware of this, we can practice to stop what we're doing as soon as we feel anger. Just stop all angry thoughts, breathe and then take time to excavate. We may find that underneath our anger is frustration, especially during today's challenging times, and underneath our frustration may be fear, fear of what will happen to us now that we've lost a job, been wiped out financially, don't know where our next meal is coming from, fear that something we do not want to happen has happened or might happen. Whew!
Now that we have correctly identified the source of our anger, we can tackle it, and instead of misdirecting our time and energy with anger (anger is exhausting and usually nonproductive), we can direct all our energies towards doing our best to find a productive solution.
"When you make a conscious choice to express nonviolence in your thought patterns, in your speech and in your actions towards self and others, you are making a healing choice for the planet." - F.M.
With great clarity and love,
We envision each member of our Earth family
Understanding - that we own the power ~ the power of choice
Understanding - that in every split-second of our lives,
we control this immense, oftentimes forgotten power to change our lives,
Understanding - that our power is our choice.
We hold a vision of everyone
Opening to and expressing their capacity
To reach into the authentic depths of their being
And consciously choose the life they envision for themselves.
If there is light in the soul,
There will be beauty in the person.
If there is beauty in the person,
There will be harmony in the house.
If there is harmony in the house,
There will be order in the nation.
If there is order in the nation,
There will be peace in the world.
- Chinese Proverb
